il forte dell'Annunziata

The Annunziata Fort

From the terrace of the fort, overhanging the sea, you can enjoy one of the most breath-taking views of the Riviera dei Fiori. The fort was built in 1831 by the Kingdom of Savoy, on the site of the Annunziata Convent of the Minori Osservanti di San Francesco(1503). The fort was part of a complex defence system and was connected with walks and underground passages to the San Paolo Fort whose ruins stand above it and which can be reached today following the road of the same name. The museum, created in 1876 by the Ventimiglian historian Girolamo Rossi (1839-1914) wasn’t established here until 1989. Exhibits include findings from the ancient Roman town of Albintimilium: glassware found in the necropolis, phials for perfume, dishes for eating, cups, glasses, statues representing gods and heroes, burial offerings and lamps, a collection of over 50 inscribed Roman tombstones, 16 marble busts of the first Roman Imperial era, sculptures from the Hanbury collection (statues, heads, reliefs, sarcophagi). Among the most important pieces is a cup with decoration cut on the wheel, showing marine scenes, dating from the 3rd C A.D., and a glass pharmacist’s flask, blown into a mould, from the end of the 1st C A.D..
